If you’re an experienced hunter from the southern U.S. and you’ve been dreaming of a truly wild hunting adventure, chances are you’ve already looked into options in Africa or Australia. But did you know there’s a place much closer—and just as wild? Welcome to El Durazno Lodge, in San Luis, Argentina: South America’s largest free-range hunting estate, exclusively operated by Paco Riestra.

More than just a destination, El Durazno is an experience that challenges your skills, stirs your soul, and reconnects you with the essence of true hunting. Let’s explore what makes this place so unique—and why seasoned hunters are making the trip year after year.

Paco Riestra Why El Durazno is a dream destination for big game hunters

What does “True Free Range” really mean?

For many hunters in the U.S., the term “free range” has become blurry. High-fence operations, managed feeding zones, and controlled environments can’t compare to the real deal. At El Durazno, there are no high fences—only 65,000 hectares (160,000+ acres) of open land where red stag, water buffalo, blackbuck, and pumas roam freely.

This is not a game ranch. This is wilderness.

The terrain offers everything: vast pampas, dense caldén forests for cover, and 15 natural lagoons scattered throughout the property. It’s a challenging, fair-chase environment where animals live by their instincts—and your success depends on yours.

The thrill of the stalk: red stag and water buffalo

If you’re coming for the red stag, April is your golden window. It’s the rut (or “brama”), when males are roaring across the valleys and challenging each other. The method is stalking, and average shooting distances range from 100–150 meters. Recommended calibers: .308, .30-06, and .300 Win Mag.

Prefer something bigger? El Durazno is also home to over 600 free-roaming water buffalo—a thrilling challenge for any experienced hunter. These giants require larger calibers like .375 H&H or .300, and average shots are a bit closer, around 50–100 meters.

Other species available include blackbuck antelope, European wild boar, and even puma for the most daring.

Life at the lodge: comfort after the challenge

After a long day in the field, you return to a charming, lakefront lodge with gourmet meals, fine wines, and five cozy double rooms. It’s not just about the hunt—it’s about the full experience.

And with a private airstrip on the estate, it’s possible to arrive directly from Buenos Aires by charter flight, saving precious travel time and maximizing your stay.

What to expect on a typical day

Early wake-up: About an hour before departure, enough time for breakfast and prep.

Morning hunt: Depart around 6–6:30 AM. Drive to the area, then stalk on foot.

Midday break: Return to the lodge for lunch and rest.

Evening hunt: Head out again around 5 PM until sunset.

It’s a full, immersive schedule—one that gets you deeply in sync with the land.

Preparing for the field: pro tips

Pack layers: March and April can have warm days and cool nights.

Stick with cotton: A local dry flower (roseta) can stick to synthetic fabrics.

Bring essentials: Sunglasses, bug spray, sunscreen, and binoculars.

Paco Riestra’s team helps you with all logistics, including gun permits and pre-trip preparation.
